How to Create Online Exams

Create and Manage Online Exams

This guide will help teachers create online exams, view existing exams, and manage various exam-related actions within the LMS. The system will calculate the final score of the exam and automatically record it in the Gradebook.

Step 1. Access Exam Creation

  1. Locate the Exam Screen: On the main screen, view a list of all created exams with details such as title, semester, start and end dates, status, and an Actions button.
  2. Find the "New" Button: In the upper right corner, click the blue "New" button to create a new exam.

Step 2: Create a New Exam

  1. Open the Exam Creation Screen: Clicking the "New" button will open a screen to enter exam details.

  1. Set Filters: In the Filters block, select the information to determine to whom the exam will be assigned.


  1. Configure Exam Details: In the right box, choose and add the exam configuration details.


      
  1. Title: This field is used to give the exam a specific name. This title will be visible to students and help them identify the exam.
  2. Start and End date: These fields define the period during which the exam is available for students to take.
  3. Status toggle: This toggle determines whether the exam is available for students to view and take.
    1. Published: Select this option when the exam is ready and should be available to students.
    2. Unpublished: Select this option to keep the exam hidden from students while you are still preparing it.
  4. Attemps: This setting controls how many times a student can attempt the exam.
  5. Randomize toggle: This toggle determines whether the questions in the exam are presented in a random order for each student.
    1. Disabled: Questions will appear in the order they were entered.
    2. Enabled: The order of the questions will be randomized for each student, which can help reduce cheating.
  6. Access code toggle: This toggle allows the teacher to require an access code for students to start the exam.
    1. Disabled: No access code is needed; students can start the exam freely within the start and end date.
    2. Enabled: An access code is required. Enter a code that students must input to access the exam, adding a layer of security.
  7. Time limit (in minutes): This setting specifies the maximum amount of time students have to complete the exam once they start. Enter the time limit in minutes.
  8. Mark type: This setting defines how the exam will be scored.
    1. Percentage: Scores are given as a percentage of the total points possible.
    2. Points: Scores are given in points, with each question contributing to a total point score.
  9. Value: Add the value of the exam
  10. Pass Mark: This setting specifies the minimum score a student must achieve to pass the exam.
  11. Provide Exam Description: In the central Description box, provide a brief description of the exam for the students. You can add images or videos in this section.

  1. Import Exam Questions: Exam questions can be imported from excel using the attached template. Also you can download all the qustions template.


  1. Create Questions:

    1. Click the "+Add Question" button to add questions.
    2. Select the type of question on "Answer type". There are six different options:
      1. Single answer: This is for questions where only one answer is correct. You'll provide answer choices and designate one as the correct answer. On the yellow button you can add images. In the plus sign you can add more options as answers.
      2. Multiple answers: This is for questions where multiple answers could be correct. You'll provide answer choices and allow students to select multiple options. On the yellow button you can add images.
        1. Mark all correct: The student will have all the question points just if they mark all the correct answers.
        2. Partial score: This will divide the total score on the correct answers and will give the student only the points that were correct
      3. Text Answer: This is for open-ended questions where students need to type in a written response.
      4. True/False answer: This is for questions with statements that can be answered as True or False.
      5. Fill in the blank: his is for questions with a blank space where students need to fill in the missing word(s) or phrase. You'll provide the question stem and specify where the blank should be inserted.
      6. Matching: This is for matching questions where students need to pair items from two lists. You'll provide both lists of items for students to match.
    3. For some question types, activate the formula keyboard if needed to create questions using symbols or numerical formulas.



  1. You can also capture and insert images to guide students in their responses.
  2. Display Total Points: The total points for the created questions will be displayed at the end of the questions section.

Step 3: Finalize and Save the Exam

  1. Save the Exam: Once all information is entered, click "Save." The exam will now appear on the main screen.

Step 4: Manage Created Exams

  1. Access Actions: Use the Actions button to perform various tasks:
    1. Duplicate: Create an exact copy of an existing exam and make necessary adjustments.
    2. Change End Date: Modify the previously set end date of the exam.
    3. View Details: See the details of the created exam.
    4. Show Results: View the results of all students who have taken the exam.
    5. Click the green "Details" button: to see the correct and incorrect answers of each student.
    6. Click the blue "Retake" button to allow a student to retake the exam.
    7. Delete: Remove the exam from the system.

By following these steps, teachers can effectively create and manage online exams, ensuring that all necessary details are captured and student performance is tracked accurately in the Gradebook.
